Deodorizer and Spot Removal: The Small Add-Ons That Belong on Every Service List

Deodorizer and spot removal are the add-ons most carpet cleaners give away. They're quick, they're cheap to do, and it feels petty to charge for them. But “quick” adds up across a full day, and a free extra on one job becomes an expected extra on every job after it. Putting them on the service list doesn't make you petty. It makes you consistent.

Small Add-Ons, Same Rules

The bigger add-on sale, protector, was covered in The Stain Protector Upsell: Offering Protection on Carpet and Upholstery the Easy Way. Deodorizer and spot removal follow the same rules: they go on the service list, they go on the quote, they go on the checklist when the checklist has a step for them, and they go on the invoice.

In CarpetBossPro, Deodorizer is a checkbox on every job and estimate, and when it's on the job, a deodorizer step appears on the tech's carpet cleaning checklist. Spot removal goes on your service list as its own priced service.

Deodorizer: When and How to Price It

Deodorizer fits naturally on certain jobs:

Most companies price it per room or as a flat amount per job. Per room is fairer on large homes. A flat amount is easier on small ones. Either way, set it up on the list so the price is the same whether the office or the tech quotes it.

Keep the description plain: “Deodorizer, per room.” Don't promise what it will remove or how long it will last.

Spot Removal vs. Normal Pre-Treatment

Every carpet job includes some spot work. The CarpetBossPro checklist has a step for spots and stains treated on every job. So when does spot removal become an add-on?

Most companies draw the line at extra time. Normal spotting during the cleaning is included. Heavy spotting, a large number of spots, or spots the customer specifically asks the tech to spend extra time on can be billed as spot removal. Write that rule into the service description so the office can explain it: “Spot removal, for heavy spotting beyond normal pre-treatment.”

Price spot removal per area, per room or per piece of upholstery. Leave the actual technique to your trained techs.

Offering Them on the Quote and at the Door

Deodorizer and spot removal are easy to offer on the estimate as optional lines. A move-out estimate template might include deodorizer by default. A pet owner template might include both. The customer approves the estimate online, and anything they approve becomes part of the scheduled job.

At the door, spot removal often comes up during the opening walk-through. The customer points at a dozen spots in the family room. The tech explains that normal spotting is included and heavy spot work is an add-on, says the price from the list, and notes the request on the job or texts the office. The office adds the line item. Checking Them Off and Writing the Note

When Deodorizer is on the job, the tech checks off the deodorizer step on the checklist. For spot removal, the spots and stains step covers the work, and the tech uses the checklist's stains-that-did-not-come-out field and the customer note to record anything that didn't lift.

This matters on spot jobs especially. A customer who paid extra for spot removal will look closely at every spot. A clear note, such as “Most spots came out. Two by the fireplace lightened but did not fully lift,” along with before-and-after photos saved with the job, keeps the conversation honest. The customer sees both in their customer app.

Billing the Small Stuff

When the tech taps Complete, the invoice is created with deodorizer and spot removal as their own line items, plus sales tax, and the card on file can be charged. Small lines like these add up across a season. They also tell a clearer story to the customer than a single bigger number would.

Because new jobs at a home fill in from the last job, a move-out customer who bought deodorizer this time, or a pet home that bought spot removal, has it on the next quote unless they drop it. Tags help the office spot the homes where it's worth offering.

Small add-ons are a quiet part of running a profitable carpet company. For how they fit with upholstery, rugs, tile and the rest, see the CarpetBossPro upholstery cleaning software page.
