Before-and-After Photos in Carpet Cleaning Software

Carpet cleaning is one of the few trades where the result is visible the moment the job ends. The traffic lane that was gray is not anymore. The coffee stain by the couch is gone. But a week later, after the carpet has dried and the family has walked on it, nobody remembers how bad it was. A before-and-after photo remembers.

Photos Are Part of the Tech's Job

The tech app, covered in The Tech App: What a Carpet Cleaning Tech Sees on the Phone, is where photos are taken. In CarpetBossPro, the tech takes before and after photos right in the app, and they are saved with the job — not in the tech's camera roll, not in a group text, not lost when the tech changes phones.

Because the photos belong to the job, they belong to the address. Next year, when the house comes due again, last year's photos are there with last year's job.

What to Photograph

You do not need a photo of every square foot. A few well-chosen shots do the work:

Take the before and the after from the same spot and angle, with similar light. Turn on the room lights for both. A before shot in daylight and an after shot under a lamp will not show much.

Photos Protect the Company

Not every stain comes out. Some spots are dye damage, some are old bleach marks, some have been treated with the wrong product for years. The carpet cleaning checklist has a place to record stains that did not come out, and a photo of that spot after treatment backs it up.

The same goes for damage. A photo of a frayed stair edge taken before the wand touched it is the end of any later question about whether the cleaning caused it. Pair it with the checklist's condition field — Good, Needs attention or Repair recommended — and a short note, and the record is clear.

Customers See Them Too

Before and after photos are visible to the customer in the customer app, along with their invoices and service history. That matters for a few reasons.

A customer who was not home during the job — a landlord, a property manager, a homeowner at work while a family member let the tech in — can see what was done. A customer looking at their invoice can see the before and after right next to it. And a customer deciding whether to book again next year can look at last year's results. The customer app is covered in The Customer App: Live Route Map, Invoices and Photos for Carpet Cleaning Customers.

Photos and Callbacks

Every carpet cleaner gets the occasional callback: “the spot came back,” “you missed the closet,” “the stairs still look dirty.” Some are fair and deserve a return trip. Some are not. Photos help you tell the difference before anyone gets in the van.

When a customer calls, the office opens the job and looks at the photos and the checklist together. If the after photo shows the closet clean, that is a different conversation than if there is no photo of the closet at all. Either way, the office has the facts instead of guessing.

Spots that wick back up as carpet dries are a real thing, and a photo of the spot clean at the end of the job makes it easier to explain what happened and offer a quick touch-up.

Photos for the Office, Not Just the Customer

Photos also help inside the company. An owner who cannot ride along with every tech can look at the photos on finished jobs and see the quality of the work. A new tech's first few weeks of photos show whether they are grooming the carpet and putting furniture back on blocks. A great before-and-after is something to show the whole crew at the next team meeting.

Keep it light on the techs, though. Ask for a handful of good photos per job, not dozens. A tech who has to stop every five minutes for pictures will start skipping them altogether. Three or four pairs that show the worst area, the customer's concerns and anything that did not come out are enough.
